I work as part of a larger group called the Online Games Group. We handle all the online games across Viacom properties such as MTV, VH1, CMT, Spike etc. My day to day duties involves a lot of creative brainstorming, precise document creation (game design docs, wire frames, information architecture diagrams, scheduling, budgeting. etc.), playing games as much as possible and figuring out ways to make our games better.
I found my job through a previous Design and Technology alum who is also in my group and they got me an interview. Since then we have brought in more people from Parsons Design and Technology program. The most valuable resource you will gain from school is the people you meet there because when you graduate, those are the very same people that you will encounter in the field. Be ambitious about your thesis – it’s what can help you get a great job. Be well- rounded and take on as many different jobs in as many different fields to broaden your perspective. If you program, learn how to design, if you design learn how to program. If you do both learn sound design. You don’t need to be an expert at everything but an understanding of the process is essential. Most of all get real work experience in any way you can.
My future plan is to go back home to Sri Lanka and figure out a way to do what I do here over there. Somewhere along the lines I plan on taking a break from games and making a documentary about surfing in Sri Lanka.”
