Non-Credit Courses
Anyone interested in continuing his/her education may register on a non-credit basis for most courses listed in this bulletin at the fees noted with each course. Formal applications, transcripts of record and personal interviews are not required. No permanent records are kept.
General Credit Courses
Students who seek college credits may register on a general credit basis for courses listed in this catalog. The student who successfully pursues a course to completion will receive a grade and may request a transcript of his/her record. Such credit is usually transferable to other degree programs. It is seldom possible to determine in advance whether credits earned will be accepted by another institution; that will be decided at the time of matriculation by the subsequent school for a particular degree program. All general credit registrations for nine (9) or more credits require the permission of an advisor in the Office of Continuing Education and must be completed in person. Course credit value is listed in italics at the end of each course.
Certificate Programs
The Certificate Program is open to all without prerequisite. A Certificate is awarded upon the completion of a predetermined program of courses which have been satisfactorily passed. It must be requested in writing during the last week of the semester.
General Counseling
The Office of Admissions hosts open information sessions Monday - Wednesday, and Friday at 10:00am and 2:00pm. No appointment is required.
For All Credit, Degree and Certificate Students
Specific requirements for credit will vary from course to course, and each student is responsible for learning from the instructor what they are: the books to read, the projects to complete and other criteria to be used for evaluation.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 as amended in 1995 and 1996, with which the New School for Social Research complies fully, was enacted to protect the privacy of educational records, to establish the right of student to inspect and review their education records, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading statements. The New School has established the following student information as public or directory information which may be disclosed by the institution at its discretion.
Student name, major field of study, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended, addresses, phone numbers, photographs, e-mail addresses, and the date & place of birth.
Students may request that the New School withhold the release of directory information by notifying the University Records Office in writing. This notification is required annually and must be renewed at the start of each fall term.
Students have the right to file complaints with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act Office in Washington D.C., concerning alleged failure by the institution to comply the Act. The New School has developed a written policy which explains in detail the procedure to be used for compliance with the provisions in the Act. Copies of the policy can be found in the University Records Office, and questions concerning the Act should be directed to that office.
